I’m Sleeping Out on Shop Street for COPE Galway

On Friday, 5th December, I’m taking part in the COPE Galway Sleep Out.
This annual event raises vital funds for COPE Galway’s homeless services — providing not just shelter, but nutritious meals, safe accommodation, practical essentials, and the kind of wraparound supports people need to transition out of homelessness.

I’ve been fortunate not to experience homelessness firsthand. But I do remember, as a child growing up with my parents and grandparents in a cramped two-bedroom apartment, the moment I felt very vulnerable: when the roof began leaking in multiple places and no one in our building could afford to fix it. The damp seeped in for months. That sense of being exposed to the elements, unprotected — it stayed with me. It made me think about what it must feel like to face that every day, with no door to close behind you.
